The term \u201ckraftliner\u201d refers to paper or paperboard produced using the kraft process, which is massively energy intensive. This energy mostly goes into powering the mill\u2019s electric motors &#8211; more than 2,400\u202fof them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But SCA\u2019s operators understood that improving the efficiency of those motors could save a significant amount of energy. To identify where improvements could be made, they needed to better understand how the motors performed. So SCA contracted\u202fABB to collect and analyze data from its motor-installed base before making expert recommendations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution selected for the task, ABB Ability\u2122\u202fCondition\u202fMonitoring, enables the secure collection of\u202fdata within\u202fdifferent parameters\u202fover time. It is tailored to a facility\u2019s specific operation and gathers data on temperature, operational patterns, stress levels, and more. The collected data can be\u202fanalyzed and used to pinpoint opportunities to improve\u202fenergy efficiency,\u202freliability, and\u202fuptime, as well as enabling predictive maintenance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motors\u202fthat do\u202fnot meet energy-efficiency requirements\u202fcan often be\u202frecycled and\u202fupgraded\u202fwith\u202fnew, more efficient models, lowering carbon emissions and\u202fenergy consumption. In addition to energy savings, the motor-recycling process adds significant environmental benefits: securing the return of metals into the market saves\u202fa considerable\u202famount of carbon emissions, energy, and water.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help of ABB\u2019s digital solutions, SCA is now able to unlock deep, data-led insights into its industrial production processes.
